WHY DOES THE AFTER PROGRAM EXIST?

When a young person harms someone, the court may order restitution. That means that the young person is ordered to pay money to help fix the harm. But many young people and families cannot afford to pay. When that happens:

  • Families go into debt
  • People who were harmed often do not get paid

WHAT IS THE AFTER PROGRAM?

AFTER is a program that helps repair harm in a more effective way.

AFTER helps:

  • The young person take responsibility
  • The person harmed gets paid sooner

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • The young person completes community service and writes a reflective essay
  • The person harmed is paid from a community fund

This helps both people move forward.

The AFTER program was launched through a partnership between the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, Juvenile Probation Department, The Bar Association of San Francisco, and the San Francisco Economic Justice Center.
